Pool Fencing Reduces Childhood Drowning Incidents

Although May is National Water Safety Month, pool safety should be a year-round effort for all pool owners.  According to Safe Kids USA, two thirds of drowning deaths occur in the summer months between May and August, and most commonly on the weekends.  Parents should also realize that approximately 72 percent of pool submersion deaths and 55 percent of pool submersion injuries occur at home.

Safe Kids USA also reports that in a national study of drowning-related incidents involving children, in 9 out of 10 cases, a parent or caregiver said they were supervising the child.  For very young children, between the age of 1 and 4, swimming pools are the most common site for a drowning to occur.

These statistics are sobering, but the good news is that four-sided fencing around home pools can prevent 50-90 percent of childhood drowning and near drowning incidents.  Safe Kids USA also recommends proper use of door alarms, pool alarms and automatic pool covers for an added layer of protection for families.
